I've lived in the same place for the last five years, but this weekend, I'm moving.

On the surface, it's not such a big deal. Everyone moves, especially twenty-somethings. My girlfriend (I'm moving in with her) has lived in 17 places in the last five years. She's been reminding me of this a lot lately, especially as I've been getting more and more sentimental about leaving.

It's hard to explain, of course. It's a four-bedroom house I'm saying goodbye to — a very social place, so I've had a total of 15 roommates over those five years. Some have stayed for a few months, others for a few years. I guess this is some version of "normal" at our age. We're single, we're young professionals, and we're all trying to learn new concepts and maybe help add positive things to the environment around us.

Then somewhere around our mid-twenties, we each feel our own unique pressure to choose a path towards what we've been told is called "The American Dream." You know: the house, the career, the car, the wife, the kids, the dogs. Some version of it happens to most of us. Sometimes earlier, sometimes later. Some people realize it, while others don't. Some spend their entire lives chasing it, and some spend their whole lives dodging it.

Me, I'm not thinking about it too much."
